Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese Cars In America - October 2010

Shock of all shocks, the Toyota Camry was the best-selling Japanese car in America in October 2010. Come to think of it, after realizing the Camry was America's best-selling car overall in October 2010, it was going to be tremendously difficult for the Honda Accord or Nissan Altima to make a run for the monthly Japanese title.

Jokes aside, the Camry's lead over the Accord in October was slim, but that ignores the fact that, slim or not, the Camry's year-to-date lead over the Accord expanded. Camry sales are off by nearly 19,000 units so far in 2010, but it's lead over the Accord stands at 294,493-259,975. In the remaining two months of 2010, the 2011 Honda Accord would have to beat the Camry by an average of 566 sales per day to beat the Camry at the end of the year. Not gonna happen.

One segment down, the Corolla and Matrix handily handled the Honda Civic in October 2010. Year-to-date figures for the two manifest a 12,429-unit lead for the Toyota Corolla/Matrix, an insurmountable gap for the Honda.

Finally, a special mention for a smaller Toyota-affiliated Japanese automaker. The 2011 Subaru Outback has a starting price of $23,195, representing terrific value for an all-wheel drive midsize wagon. Nevertheless, Subaru would have to sell more than 12,000 Outbacks in November and 12,000 more in December to top 100,000 sales for the year. However, combined sales of the Legacy and Outback - they were once one, you know - reached 107,416 at the end of October 2010. That's a bit more than last year's 65,026 at this juncture of 2009.
