One month does not make a trend, but subcompact car sales are up 12% year-to-date after falling 11% in the first one-third of 2013. (Compared with the first four months of 2012, subcompact sales in 2014 are up 0.2% with help from the Mitsubishi Mirage, a car that wasn't on sale at this time two years ago.)
However, Canadians registered fewer new subcompacts in the last four months then they did compacts in the month of April alone. Compact sales are down 4% this year and slid more than 2% in April.
The Toyota Corolla led all small cars in April 2014, and all cars overall. Combined with the Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic, and Mazda 3, the Corolla and its three closest rivals accounted for 52% of the overall compact car market. Not since May 2013 have the four best-selling cars all topped 4000 units. The Chevrolet Cruze, Dodge Dart, and Ford Focus combined for a 4.1% year-over-year April increase and grabbed 20.2% of the compact market, up from 18.9% a year ago.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the Encore and XV Crosstrek are listed with small SUVs, too, and the Acura ILX shown with mainstream cars is also displayed with luxury cars... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
