September 2012 Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Sales In America
Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus sold 17,851 copies of their smaller rear-wheel-drive (and all-wheel-drive) vehicles in America last month. September 2012 sales of the entry-level Benz were strong enough to make the C-Class America's best-selling premium brand vehicle. The BMW 3-Series ranked second. U.S. sales of the Lexus IS fell 11.5% in September. |

The 3-Series-fighting Lexus isn't even Lexus's own most popular vehicle, nor is it Lexus USA's most popular car. But while Audi's A4 and Cadillac's CTS and the Infiniti G sedan all outsold the IS in September, we wouldn't yet say the IS is a miserable failure. But it's not selling nearly as well as it has in the recent past.
Where Lexus is thriving is in the midsize luxury cruiser sector. The ES350 and ES300h are certainly not sports sedans, but they are popular, wildly more popular this fall than the ES was at this time last year. The ES ranked tenth among premium brand vehicles in September 2011 but moved up to fourth last month. In August, the ES outsold the C-Class and 3-Series.U.S. Sept. YTD Sales: All 265 Vehicles Ranked
The introduction of the ES300h has helped; approximately 21% of all ES sales in September were hybrids. Whether we're discussing the ES300h or the regular ES350, the level of popularity achieved by the front-wheel-drive Lexus says something about the desire many buyers have to avoid Nürburgring-developed track stars. |
