In September 2012, while traditional subcompact car sales leaders from Nissan, Honda, and Hyundai posted year-over-year declines, the more stylish Chevrolet Sonic and Kia Rio posted huge year-over-year increases. Compared with Chevy's subcompact volume from last September (which included both the Sonic and Aveo), sales jumped 179% in September. Two of the Sonic's 7527-unit total were Aveo-derived. Over at Kia, sales of the Good 12-winning Rio shot up 1569%.
Elsewhere, Ford Fiesta sales fell slightly, the Mazda 2 plunged 21%, and Toyota Yaris sales plummeted 30%. The Versa, Fit, and Accent were down 32%, 2%, and 5%, respectively. Not including cars like the Scion iQ, Fiat 500, Chevrolet Spark, or Mini Cooper, the segment - as defined by the Versa, Sonic, Fit, Accent, Fiesta, Prius C, Rio, Yaris, and 2 - accounted for 3.1% of the overall market in September 2012.All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. September 2012 YTD Sales

Midsize Car Sales Chart |
Put that in context: the Toyota Camry was responsible for finding 2.9% of all new vehicle buyers in September. The Camry, America's best-selling car last month and a year ago, accounted for 2.4% of the overall market in September 2011. Those same subcompacts, aside from the Prius C which wasn't on sale at this time last year, accounted for 2.9% of the market in September of last year. Year-over-year, non-Prius C subcompact sales in America were up 9.9% in September. The overall new vehicle market improved 12.9%.
So growth in the subcompact sector is slightly slower than that which is clearly visible in the rest of the industry? Be careful before you draw such conclusions. For one thing, we're just talking about one month, albeit a month with very high fuel prices. Through the first three quarters of 2012, the Sonic, Accent, Rio, 2, Versa, and Yaris have all posted notable gains. Second, a new crop of smaller-than-thou alternatives add to the small car sector's total volume. Fiat 500 sales rose by 1403 units, year-over-year, to make September the Cinquecento's best month yet. Chevrolet threw down another 2223 Sparks. Scion sold 683 iQ four-seaters. And smart fortwo sales jumped 120%, making September the fortwo's second month this year with 1000+ units. |

Again, small cars aren't the only automobiles recording sales increases. Better-than-average increases were also reported by the Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, Ford Taurus, Honda Accord and Crosstour, Hyundai Azera, Kia Optima, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Toyota Camry and Prius and Venza, and Volkswagen's Passat and CC.
