October 2012 U.S. Small, Midsize, And Large Car Sales
Toyota's Camry has long since been declared the best-selling car in America in 2012. This clarifies which car ends the year as the top midsize car in America. Chevrolet's rental favourite, the value-priced Impala, continues as a high-volume large car. And although it seems too early to call it for the Civic, Honad's 11,064-unit compact lead over the Toyota Corolla seems insurmountable. |

Let's then take this opportunity to look at specific smaller battles based on America's October 2012 passenger car sales results. At the smallest end of the small car category, the smart fortwo is now 629 sales ahead of the Scion iQ with two months remaining. With smart's U.S. operations under Mercedes-Benz's control, sales have surged, relatively speaking. Of course, Chevrolet has been able to sell more Sparks in four months than Mercedes-Benz has sold smarts in ten months. The Spark has yet to pose a challenge to the Fiat 500, sales of which rose 89% compared with October 2011 when, you'll remember, the selling of Fiat to America was very much underway.
Up a size category in the more clearly defined subcompact sector, the Hyundai Accent had a dreadful month as a result of poor supply. But Toyota Yaris sales plunged 62%. Toyota's own Prius C is clearly the preferable of the two Toyotas in the minds of America's car buyers. Strong year-over-year gains are leading the Bad 8-winning Nissan Versa to an easy victory over all rivals. Even when combined, the Accent and its Kia Rio partner don't measure up to the Versa's total. |
Midsize Car Sales Chart |
The Toyota Prius Plug-In has only been on sale for eight of 2012's ten months, but it's still worth pointing out that the Chevrolet Volt has outsold the Prius Plug-In and Nissan Leaf combined, and has done so with 2916 units to spare. Chevrolet has an indirect rival in Ford's new C-Max, which beat the Volt - in the Volt's best sales month ever - by 221 units in the C-Max's second month. Hyped-up early adoption for the Ford? Can the Volt reverse this Ford hybrid/electric takeover? October 2012 was the Volt's sixth consecutive month in which sales increased over the prior month. Perhaps higher numbers are on the way.
GoodCarBadCar lists a handful of cars with these passenger cars which could reasonably be included with small and midsize crossovers. As a group, the Honda Crosstour, Subaru Outback and XV Crosstrek, and Toyota's Venza account for 1.24% of all U.S. new vehicle sales this year. All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. October YTD Sales

The hated Crosstour sells less often than the Volkswagen CC. The Outback is America's 38th-best-selling vehicle line this year. October was just the XV's second month on sale, but it was a month in which the XV was responsible for 27% of all Impreza-based volume. Venza sales are up this year, but that's in comparison to the Venza's worst full sales year of the three which have been completed. Toyota USA sold 54,410 Venzas in 2010.
As will always be the case in the future, historic brand and corporate totals (monthly and yearly going back to 2002) are now available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, along with results for more than 260 currently sold vehicles. That's where you'll find out that Chevrolet has already sold more Sonics in ten months of 2012 than Chevrolet ever sold Aveos in a full calendar year.
