Midsize SUV Sales In America - April 2014 YTD
Ford utility vehicle sales are down 2% in 2014 as the Escape loses a bit of market share and as the aging Edge nears replacement. And as sales of the best-selling three-row vehicle in America, the Explorer, decline. |

April 2014 was an improved month for the Explorer - sales jumped 20%. (Police Interceptor Explorers were up 50% to 1850 units; civilian Explorer volume was up 17% to 16,629.) But year-to-date sales of the non-police Explorer are down 6%. The days of Ford selling more than 400,000 Explorers on an annual basis are over.
But even if Ford's 6% decline continues, there will likely be around 180,000 Explorers sold in America this year. That figure is clearly lower than what Ford managed last year, but it's higher than the Explorer's total in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, or 2012.

The Explorer is being challenged on many fronts. Toyota Highlander sales are up 23% this year, an increase of nearly 9000 units. (Civilian Explorer volume is down by 3856 units through four months.) Dodge Durango growth has slowed dramatically since Ron Burgundy commercials began airing, but Durango sales are up 15%, or 2865 units. Jeep plans to sell a Grand Wagoneer in the latter half of 2018, but even with two rows, the Grand Cherokee is increasingly popular. But the 300,000 Grand Cherokees Jeep sold in 1999? We're not going back there.

The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you'll see the Outback and Venza here but also with midsize cars, too, and the tweener-sized Sorento and Santa Fe are shown with midsize SUVs and small SUVs, and the pricey FJ Cruiser and Xterra with smaller utilities and the Volkswagen Touareg with luxury SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways.
