Nissan Pathfinder volume nearly quadrupled in the United States in May 2013 as the new variant of Nissan's long-running SUV nameplate reached its highest monthly total yet.
In a down month, the Toyota Highlander outsold the surging Pathfinder by more than 2000 units. The Highlander was outsold by the Honda Pilot by a slim 603-unit margin.
Ford sold more than 18,000 Explorers in May. 1148 of the Explorer's total came from the Police Interceptor Utility Vehicle. Jeep Grand Cherokee sales shot up 21% to 16,034 units in May. The Ford Explorer, Ford Flex, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, and GM's Lambda trio accounted for 4.5% of America's new vehicle market in May.
Six smaller SUVs and crossovers from Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors - Escape, Equinox, Journey, Compass, Patriot, Encore - were responsible for 5.6% of the industry's May volume.
