33% of the 167,263 trucks sold in the United States in May were Ford F-Series pickups. Its nearest rival, the Chevrolet Silverado, was 20,281 sales back of the Ford. Even when the Silverado is paired with its twin, the GMC Sierra, the F-Series was still 7085 sales ahead in May 2012.

Exclude the big boys - F-Series, GM's twins, the Dodge Ram, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, Cadillac Escalade EXT, and Chevrolet Avalanche - and Americans acquired only 25,455 trucks last month. The numbers for small and midsize trucks were hurt by the disappearance or near disappearance of the Dodge Dakota and Ford Ranger.

No truck enjoyed as great a year-over-year increase as the Toyota Tundra in May. Sales of all other trucks - the ones with a future, at least - climbed northward, as well.

The Kia Sedona, Mazda 5, and Volkswagen Routan took a hit last month. Year-to-date, the same three minivans are in decline. The Chrysler Town & Country has no future, Chrysler says, but sales jumped 56% in May and are up 24% so far this year. Sales of the rarely-sold Nissan Quest more than doubled, the Toyota Sienna jumped 70%, and the Honda Odyssey and Dodge Grand Caravan both reported year-over-year increases better than 30%.
