Canada's MPV market tumbled 14% in October 2013 as the overall auto industry reported a collective 7% increase.
Much of the blame for that decline can be laid at the feet of properly miniature minivans. Chevrolet Orlando volume fell by 921 units. The still-fresh Kia Rondo was down by 361 units. Mazda 5 sales slid 31%, or 93 units.
Exclude the small trio from the equation and minivan sales were actually up from 5387 units a year ago to 5698 in October 2013, a 5.8% increase.
Year-to-date, sales of bigger vans - Town & Country, Grand Caravan, Odyssey, Sedona, Quest, Sienna, Routan - are down from 69,377 in the first ten months of 2012 to 68,293 over the last ten months, a 1.6% drop.
Exclude the defunct Routan from that last equation and full-size minivans (oxymoron?) were up 7% in October; down 0.9% year-to-date.
Chrysler, which built the Routan for Volkswagen in Windsor, Ontario, recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of minivan production. Combined, the Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan owned 56% of the minivan market in Canada in October; 66% of the full-size minivan market.
