Minivan sales in America slid 4.5% in May 2013, a decline not as bad as April's 6.1% fall, but one that stands in stark contrast to the overall industry's 8% improvement.
Numbers out of Honda would lead one to believe that the minivan industry could be healthy, but with the disappearance of the Volkswagen Routan and the Kia Sedona's temporary leave, plus the sharp decline reported by the Toyota Sienna in May, sales were down by 2491 units last month.
Remove the Routan and Sedona from the equation, and the market for minivans was still down in May 2013, but not as severely. A 1.2% decline is a much easier pill to swallow.
The Odyssey contributed 1852 extra sales to American Honda's 6016-units of growth in May, and it shot to the head of the pack on year-to-date terms by outselling the previous leader, Toyota's Sienna, by 2363 units in May. Sales of Chrysler's minivan twins remain down through five months, but May 2013 was a bit better than May 2012.
