Large Luxury SUV Sales In America - February 2014 YTD

2014 Toyota Land Cruiser
The landscape of America's full-size luxury flagship SUV category is bound to change over the next few months as Cadillac replaces its Escalade and Escalade ESV and extinguishes the Escalade EXT, as Lincoln updates the Navigator with V6-only EcoBoost power, and as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class stays exactly the same.

In the meantime, segment-wide U.S. sales - admittedly in a segment which has no clear borders, as the X5 and Cayenne extend their tendrils upward and the G-Wagen competes with basically nothing - plunged 19% in February 2014.

The Escalade trio's 21% drop was predictable, as was the Lincoln Navigator's 29% decline.

The more obvious cause of the drop relates to the 38% decrease in sales of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. GL sales rose to their highest level yet in 2013, but we've now seen four consecutive year-over-year declines. GL volume fell by 1056 units in February 2014 as sales of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class rose by 525 units to 3258 units and the smaller GLK climbed 8%, or 204 units, to 2624 sales.

The biggest percentage year-over-year increase was the $79,605 Toyota Land Cruiser's 5.6% improvement.
