0.6% of the U.S. auto industry's July 2013 sales are represented in this post. Sales of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class slid slightly last month, as did overall Cadillac Escalade volume. But the Land Rover Range Rover attracted more than twice as many buyers as it did in previous-generation form a year ago.
Indeed, the Range Rover was easily Land Rover's best-selling model in July. That's not completely surprising given that the SUV which typically tops Land Rover's sales chart, the Range Rover Sport, is in a replacement phase. Then again, it is especially surprising when one remembers that the Range Rover is Land Rover's most expensive model. By far.
In fact, the Range Rover outsold the company's two least expensive models, the Evoque and LR2, combined.
This isn't the typical mode of operation in the automotive business. The GL-Class sells once for every 3.5 C-Class sedans and coupes. Cadillac's whole Escalade range finds one buyer for every 2.5 SRX buyers. And the Lexus LX570 represents just 1.3% of all Lexus sales in July; just 1.6% of Lexus's year-to-date total.
Land Rover's next Range Rover Sport will come to market with a base price that's $20,000 less than the base price of the Range Rover. The price gap between the basic Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz's basic GL-Class is even larger.
In other words, the SUVs you see listed here aren't necessarily the most direct rivals. Camry vs. Accord? Not so much. Many more luxury SUVs and crossovers are listed here.
