Top 30 Best-Selling Vehicles In America - September 2015

2015 Ford F-150 Limited white front
With its biggest year-over-year improvement since January, the Ford F-Series was easily America's best-selling new vehicle line in September 2015.

U.S. Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - August 2015 YTD

The F-Series' 16% improvement translates to 9788 more Ford truck sales in September 2015 than there were in September 2014. That's more extra F-Series sales than there were total Ford Mustang sales in what was a particularly strong September for the Mustang, America's 19th-best-selling car last month.

While car volume has been flat for much of 2015, September was an exception.

Both because the month was longer than September 2014 from a daily sales rate perspective and because September 2015 included the high-volume Labour Day weekend - which September 2014 did not - car sales were up last month.

More importantly, the rate of growth didn't occur simply because of an added day in which to sell cars. U.S. passenger car volume, growing between 6% and 7% in September, exceeded the 4% extra time added to the month.

As a result, the 12 top-selling cars in America all posted more sales in September 2015 than during the same period one year ago. From the top-selling Toyota Camry's 21% improvement to the Nissan Versa's 50% jump, car volume wasn't unhealthy in September 2015.

That said, SUVs and crossovers grew at a far faster pace. An additional 130,000 SUVs and crossovers were sold in September 2015 compared with September 2014, a massive 31% year-over-year improvement. The 19 top sellers in the category, including the 11 shown here, all posted gains.

Compared with September 2014, this list no longer features the Toyota Tacoma, BMW 3-Series, or Chrysler Town & Country. Instead, the Toyota Highlander, Kia Soul, and Subaru Outback have stepped in.

We've already published September lists for the 20 best-selling cars, 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers, and complete figures for every pickup truck, links to which you'll find below. Throwing all those vehicles into one group results in this list of the 30 best-selling vehicles overall. We end up with four pickup trucks, no minivans, 15 cars, and 11 utility vehicles.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these top-selling vehicles can always be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, and for those not viewing the mobile version of this site, near the top right of this page, as well.
