Sporty Car Sales In Canada - December 2013 And 2013 Year End

2014 Kia GT4 Stinger Concept
If Kia Builds A Production Car Based On Their GT4
Stinger Concept, It'll Likely Be A More Direct Rival To
The Scion FR-S Than The Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Combined, the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger didn't sell as often as the Ford Mustang in Canada in 2013. In fact, the Mustang outsold its combined direct rivals with 1373 units to spare last year. Sales of the Mustang slid; sales of the Camaro plunged. The Challenger's market share in the category grew from 16.1% to 17.3%.

The Jaguar F-Type had a significant impact in a category that's led by the Porsche Boxster. With its reach-higher pricing scheme that puts the Boxster and 911 in its sights, the F-Type isn't going to attract the buyers who might consider an entry-level Audi TT, a car that costs more than $27,000 less. But, at least in its first seven months, it was relatively popular.

None of those high-end Euro roadsters sold quite as often as the declining Nissan 370Z. The Z, meanwhile, sold just once for every four Genesis Coupes sold by Hyundai. The Scion FR-S outsold the Genesis Coupe by twelve units. The Subaru BRZ was more than twice as popular as the Nissan 370Z.

Speaking of being twice as popular, for every Chevrolet Corvette sold in Canada in 2013, there were two Porsche 911s sold. South of the border, the Corvette was 66% more common a purchase/lease than the 911 in 2013. 2013, however, wasn't a real measuring stick for Corvette popularity. once the C7 arrived in the fourth quarter, everything changed. 54% of the Corvettes sold in Canada in 2013 were sold between October and December.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly Canadian auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. These tables are now sortable, so you can rank sports cars, roadsters, coupes, and hot hatches any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

* also included in another GCBC segment breakdown
GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you'll see the 6-Series listed here and with large luxury sedans and the Audi A5 here and with luxury cars, because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above. GoodCarBadCar is always open to hearing about the ways you would break down segments, so feel free to get in touch.
