According to the Automotive News Data Center, the Canadian passenger car market grew 17% in February 2012, growing by approximately 7000 units from February 2011. Canada's light truck market - anything from SUVs to minivans to high-riding crossovers - combined for 7% growth. The two best-selling cars in Canada in February, Hyundai's Elantra and Honda's Civic, accounted for 14.1% of the new car market and 6.2% of the overall new vehicle market. The Elantra and Civic were, therefore, rather obviously the two best-selling small cars in Canada last month, as well. In other battles, the Fiat sold more than twice as many 500s and 500Cs as Mini sold Coopers, this despite the fact that the Cooper range now includes five cars. The Scion iQ and smart fortwo tied at 74 sales apiece. The best-selling subcompact in Canada was the Hyundai Accent, sales of which are up 20% this year. Mazda's 2 ranked second in its segment. No small car made greater year-over-year gains than the Fiat 500, which only went on sale at the end of February last year and thus doesn't really present valid year-over-year comparisons. The Mazda 2 and Toyota Yaris were up 94% and 86%, respectively. Nissan Cube sales slid 56%; the Kia Soul was down 35%.After the jump you'll find detailed February 2012 sales figures for small, midsize and large cars. Massive increases reported by the Kia Optima, Toyota Camry, Chrysler 200, and Volkswagen Passat made Canada's midsize segment a very different world in February. Chevrolet Malibu sales dropped 30%, the Ford Fusion slid 14%, Honda Accord sales fell 18%, and Mazda 6 sales were nearly chopped in half compared with this time a year ago. Sales of the Chrysler 200, however, when compared with sales of the 200 and Sebring last year, shot through the roof. Kia Optima sales went from nearly nothing to a more than decent 824. The Volkswagen Passat is still far from putting up segment-leading figures, but combined sales of the CC and regular Passat are now capable of forming a healthy support section for the popular Jetta. And the Camry, number one in midsize sales by 424 units, is still surging. February was the Camry's fourth-best Canadian sales period of the last 26 months. The Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 combined for 767 Canadian sales in February 2012. Throw the Dodge Challenger in and the platform's total jumps to 851. Don't take this for a direct side-by-side comparison, but it's interesting nonetheless: Chrysler's LX/LC platform out-sold Toyota's passenger car hybrids by 158 units in February. Yet it's the Prius V and supposedly hot-selling new Camry Hybrid that are getting the attention.300 and Charger sales weren't the only thing rising in the more expensive region of the mainstream category in February. Buick LaCrosse sales jumped 54%. Nissan Maxima sales shot up at an 82% clip. And even the Toyota Avalon reported gains. From 27 to 30 sales.
