To assist in the gauging of popularity, GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats charts now show the top-selling cars at the top, the lowest-volume vehicles at the bottom. Inevitably, you'll discover that not all cars in a single graph are direct competitors. The Scion iQ and Suzuki SX4 are hardly rivals. Click any of the charts for a larger view. The Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Chevrolet Cruze, and Ford Focus took their usual positions on top of the small car category in April 2012. These same six cars were, as we've come to expect, Canada's six best-selling passenger cars overall. |
April 2012 Midsize Car Sales Chart |
And while we're not surprised to see the Hyundai Accent leading the subcompact category - 900 sales ahead of its partner, the Kia Rio - the Chrysler 200's midsize victory is both surprising and upsetting. Markdowns at Chrysler dealers have reached gigantic proportions. A basic 4-cylinder 200 LX is presently enjoying a 17.5% discount straight from the factory. The base price falls to $16,495, but a Chrysler dealer near GCBC Towers lops another $1000 off before negotiations with fleet buyers even begin. Chrysler sold 187 200 Convertibles in April. Chrysler Canada's dealers also sold 287 Fiat 500 Convertibles.Year-to-date, the Toyota Camry's lead over the Hyundai Sonata expanded to 942 units by the end of April. Last year, the Ford Fusion was the best-selling midsize car in Canada, beating the Hyundai Sonata by 2061 sales. In 2010, the Fusion beat the Honda Accord by 4705 sales. And in 2009, the Fusion beat the Accord by 509 sales. This year, while Ford dealers wait for a new Fusion, the Blue Oval midsizer has fallen 1321 sales behind the Camry. |
April 2012 Large Car Sales Chart |
Of course, none of those midsize cars stand a chance at dominating the Canadian passenger car segment. Moreover, the large cars you'll see at the bottom of this post are even less likely to make a stand in Canada. Ford Taurus sales more than doubled last month... to 483. The Buick Verano was more popular in April 2012. Chevrolet Impala sales jumped 24% in April, as well, but we already know the next Impala will likely not be the high-volume player the current car is. Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these small, midsize, and large cars as well as every other vehicle currently on sale in North America can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page. After the jump you can explore the facts and figures from April 2012's results in Canada. Year-to-date figures equal one-third of the calendar year.
