Small SUV Sales Chart Click Any Chart For Larger View |
General Motors sold 26,081 small crossovers in the United States in October 2012. 22,673 of those were Chevrolet Equinoxes and GMC Terrains. As one vehicle, these twins would have been America's best-selling utility vehicle in October, as they would be through the first ten months of 2012. Separated, however, the Equinox and Terrain were America's third and 13th-best-selling SUVs in October.GoodCarBadCar has added the Volkswagen Touareg to America's midsize SUV group. It will continue to be displayed alongside midsize luxury SUVs, as well. In the United States, the Touareg sells more frequently than the Dodge Nitro and Mitsubishi Endeavor, but they're both defunct. But the Touareg's premium price point makes it a slow seller compared with mainstream vehicles. The Touareg's mainstream badge also makes it a slow seller compared to luxury SUVs and crossovers. All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. October YTD Sales

Midsize SUV Sales Chart |
General Motors sold 15,323 big Lambda platform crossovers in October. That's more than the total achieved by Ford's Explorer, but Ford did sell another 1444 Flexes and 8406 five-seat Edges. 5% of the Explorers sold were Police Interceptors. Nissan sold 7268 Muranos, Xterras, and Pathfinders in October. The Chrysler Group sold 15,149 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos. Toyota's rough and tumble FJ Cruiser and rugged 4Runner joined the Toyota Highlander to form a 13,984-unit triad.
Americans registered 18,038 new full-size, truck-based, mainstream-brand sport-utility vehicles in October 2012. 73% of them were GM products. 38% of those GM products were Chevrolet Tahoes. The Toyota Sequoia is the only large SUV that's posted a year-over-year increase over the first ten months of 2012. Its 5% improvement is well below the 14% growth shown by the overall industry. |
Large SUV Sales Chart |
The biggest year-over-year gain reported by any mainstream SUV in October? Just days before announcing the end of U.S. operations, Suzuki USA reported a 64% year-over-year increase in Grand Vitara sales.
As will always be the case in the future, historic brand and corporate totals (monthly and yearly going back to 2002) are now available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, along with results for more than 260 currently sold vehicles. That's where you'll find out that Toyota USA sells more Prius Plug-Ins every month than Sequoias.
