In April, the two best-selling minivans in Canada were partners from Chrysler's Windsor, Ontario, plant where Volkswagen's Routan is built. The Routan, of course, was not one of the two best-selling minivans in Canada last month. In fact, the Routan was the second-worst-selling minivan in the country, only seven sales ahead of the unlovable Nissan Quest. The Quest sold rarely enough to be featured on April's list of the worst-selling vehicles in the country.
Only two of the nine minivans eligible for a year-over-year decrease in managed to avoid a slide. On year-to-date terms, the best-selling Dodge Grand Caravan (up 7% in April) is down 10%, whilethe Toyota Swagger Wagon Sienna has reported a 7% rise in the first third of 2012. Combined, the Grand Caravan and April's second-ranked minivan, the Chrysler Town & Country, owned 63% of the market. Chrysler Canada stores sold Grand Caravans 5.5 times more often than they sold T&Cs.
In all, 9193 minivans were sold in Canada in April 2012. During the same 30 days, 25,752 trucks were sold. One-third were Ford F-Series pickups. 1.3% were Chevrolet Avalanches or luxury Avalanches Cadillac Escalade EXTs. Sadly, General Motors has cancelled the Avalanche, which should spell the end of the Caddy truck, too, at least in its current form.
The accompanying pickup truck chart ranks trucks by total April volume. GoodCarBadCar published the best selling truck list on the 12th. Through the end of April, the Dodge Ram is 1946 sales ahead of the Honda Civic in the race to be Canada's second-best-selling vehicle.
