Midsize Luxury Car Sales And Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales In America - April 2012

2013 Lexus GS450h Silver
April 2012 was the first month since the new Volvo S60 went on sale that it failed to match the previous year's U.S. sales volume. S60 sales slid 12% in the United States in April, although sales of Volvo's best-selling model are still up 24% so far this year. Volvo USA's two other remaining passenger car nameplates plunged 45% and 41%, respectively, in April 2012.

Acura sold 331 TSX Wagons in April. From a volume perspective, that was down 9%. But April 2012 had three fewer selling days than April 2011, so on a daily sales rate basis, TSX Wagon sales actually improved by 2%. 1263 have been sold so far this year.

Unfortunately, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz don't break down the wagon (or coupe and convertible) sales figures for the A4, 3-Series, and E-Class. One thing to note, however, is that the TSX did outsell the A4 in April. One year ago, the A4 won that race by 223 units. The A4 ended 2011 4299 sales ahead of the TSX.

Speaking of the Good 12-winning 3er, BMW's 3-Series was easily America's top-selling premium brand vehicle in April. Its margin of victory over the Lexus RX was 2161 units. In April of last year, 3-Series sales had fallen 14.5% and the RX was America's most popular luxury vehicle.

Sales of America's two leading midsize luxury cars, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series, have fallen slightly this year. The E-Class - available as a sedan, wagon, coupe, and convertible - fell 6% over the course of the first four months of 2012. The 5-Series - available as a handsome sedan or ugly GranTurismo hatch - dropped 3% from 16,721 in the first four months of 2011 to 16,275 during the same period this year. The 1656 missing sales from these two Germans have been more than made up by the two most prominent newbies. Sales of the new Audi A6 have doubled, up 2573 units to 5146 sales this year. Lexus's GS sales have nearly quintupled to 7054.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these models and every other nameplate currently on sale in North America can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page. After the jump you'll find detailed U.S. luxury car sales info from April and the first four months of 2012. Click either of the accompanying charts for a larger view.

There's no arguing about the magnitude of Volvo S60 sales in the United States in April. Standing in stark contrast to BMW's 7452 3-Series sales or seven other cars which sold at least 574 more copies last month, the new S60 appears feeble. On...
