Rather than mock Mercedes-Benz and Toyota for only combining to sell 405 G-Wagens and Land Cruisers in April 2013 - how many decades-old German military vehicles and African safari utilities should a company sell in America? - let's celebrate.
Mercedes-Benz sold more than twice as many G-Class SUVs this April than in April 2012. Land Cruiser sales are up 46% this year. Hooray.
Perhaps both are unnecessary. But both certainly appear to be much more thoughtful purchases than, say, a $66,800 Porsche Cayenne S, a vehicle GoodCarBadCar placed in 2013's The Good 12. The G-Wagen starts at $113,000 and rises to $134,300 in G63 AMG trim. The Land Cruiser starts at $78,555, and Toyota offers no options.
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz also sold 2481 GLs in April, down 10% compared with April of last year. But through the first third of 2013, sales of the $62,400-$116,925 GL-Class are up 27.5%. The only potential rivals to have sold more frequently are Mercedes-Benz's own $47,270-$96,100 M-Class and BMW's $47,500-$88,850 X5. Both are shown with other more similarly-sized and/or priced midsize luxury SUVs.
