Forecasts for one of the greatest auto sales months in the history of mankind have prompted a great deal of discussion about just how good August 2013 was to automakers competing for attention in the United States.
August 2013's American results are, and will be, displayed in the exhaustive table below, where monthly and year-to-date totals for every brand are listed.
Now that all manufacturers have reported, we know that the U.S. auto industry grew 16.8% in August 2013, on a year-over-year basis, and is up 9.5% through the first eight months of 2013. The 1.5 million new vehicle sales equal a SAAR of over 16 million.

Hyundai reported U.S. sales figures for August first with its best August ever and its best year-over-year improvement of 2013. Hyundai USA sold over 400 copies of their Equus for the first time in the model's three-year history. The Chrysler Group reported its best August in six years with little growth at Fiat and Chrysler, moderate improvements at Jeep and Dodge, and a 7794-unit improvement in Ram truck sales. Ford sold more than 70,000 F-Series pickups for the second time this year, and Ford brand car sales were up 18%.
Volkswagen is selling more Tiguans and Passats than at any time in the brand's history - including 4470 diesel Passats in August - but the brand is struggling with the loss of the Routan, declining Beetle Coupe volume, and lost sales from the Golf and Jetta nameplates. Buick sold more than 24,000 vehicles, accounting for 9% of all 276,000
General Motors sales in August, up from 7.5% a year ago. Subaru's 45% increase equals 12,768 extra sales compared to August 2012 and the best month in the company's history. Porsche sold more vehicles in August than in any August in the company's history, helped by rising volume across their lineup. Oh, except for the Panamera, which slid 30%. 41% of the Audis sold in America in August were Q5s, Q5s, or Allroads, sales of which rose 92%, 55%, and 13% respectively.
Infiniti's first month of Q50 sales resulted in 2434 units ending up in driveways across America, along with 3020 remaining G sedans. Mitsubishi sold 59% more Outlander Sports this August than last and Outlander sales more than doubled. Kia posted monthly YOY increases with the Rio, Optima, Sportage, and Sorento.
Honda's 27% increase was fuelled by record MDX sales, record CR-V sales, and a combined Civic/Accord total of 78,017 units. Mazda hasn't recorded an August with this much volume since 2003 - 6 sales jumped 167%. BMW generated six in ten sales with the surging 3-Series, up 67%, and the 5-Series, up 158%.
Jaguar-Land Rover sold 6661 vehicles, more than in any August since 2005. Mercedes-Benz's 21% gains came despite a huge (and predictable) decline in S-Class and CL-Class sales, ahead of their replacement's arrival. Benz GL-Class volume shot up 79% in August.
Whether you include Sprinter in Mercedes-Benz's total or not, Lexus was America's best-selling premium brand in August, thanks to a 23% surge. It's like old times.
