UK Drivers Converting their Cars to Run LPG as Fuel Prices Surge

No thanks to the continuing hike in petrol prices, a record number of UK drivers are converting their cars to run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). According to the UK LPG Association, the number of Brits using this type of fuel has increased from a mere 3,500 in 1998 to an astonishing 150,000 this year. In the UK, LPG sells for about 49p ($0.95) a litre compared with 117p ($2.28) a litre for petrol and 131p ($2.55) per litre for diesel.

The conversion, that includes installing an additional fuel tank, extra fuel lines and injectors, costs approximately £2,000 or about $3,900. In addition to being cheaper than petrol, vehicles running on LPG are also exempt from London’s congestion charge. (Picture: Chevrolet HHR LPG)
