Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In America - April 2011

There's no arguing about the magnitude of Volvo S60 sales in the United States in April. Standing in stark contrast to BMW's 7452 3-Series sales or seven other cars which sold at least 574 more copies last month, the new S60 appears feeble. On the other hand, the Volvo S60 was far and away Volvo USA's best-selling vehicle in April 2011, out-performing Volvo's #2 product, the XC60, by 752 sales. S60 sales in April 2010 amounted to nothing. Seriously. They didn't sell any as the wait for the 2011 S60 was.... underway. The S60 was worth 31% of all April Volvo sales.

In the first third of 2011, S60 sales are up 25,788% to 6213. Yep, BMW sold more 3-Series sedans, coupes, convertibles, and wagons in April than Volvo has sold S60s so far this year. But for Volvo, the S60 has been a bit of a saviour. Last year at this time Volvo had just reported total U.S. sales of 3138. This April, Volvo sold 6404 vehicles. Other than the aging S60 and aging XC90, every Volvo model has posted year-over-year declines in the first four months of this year. Without the S60's resurgence, Volvo would be down 15.6% in 2011. With the new S60, Volvo is up 17.7%.

While it's worth pointing out that Infiniti sold twice as many G25s and G37s as Volvo did S60s, Infiniti G sales plummeted from 7009 in March to 3885 in April. Like the Infiniti and the overall market, sales of the 3-Series, Cadillac CTS, Lexus CT, Lexus IS, Lincoln MKZ, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Saab 9-3, and Volvo S40/V50 also declined over that period. During the same time, sales of the 2011 Volvo S60 increased by 20 units.

Oh, but all is not well with Volvo in the other chart posted a little ways down this page. XC70 sales were down 18.2% and are down 32.5% this year. (There was just the one V70 sold in April.) Meanwhile, Volvo S80 sales fell 27.6% and have nearly been cut in half in 2011. The most popular midsize luxury cars remain German strongholds from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. 5-Series sales improved at a 77.5% clip; E-Class sales were up 17.9% in April.
