Midsize Car Sales In America - August 2011

2012 Honda Crosstour Silver
Toyota Camry sales are recovering to the point that the volume put up by all its rivals seem... lackluster.

Think of it this way: the Chrysler 200 had a really good month. It was America's 14th-best-selling car as year-over-year volume jumped 141% compared with its predecessor's August 2010 performance. The Ford Fusion, meanwhile, was America's fifth-ranked midsize car in August 2011 sales as year-over-year, the Fusion was up 5%. Together, however, the Chrysler 200 and Ford Fusion were out-sold by the Camry. Not just by a hair, either. The Camry beat the Americans by 1399 units.

Camry sales fell 1.9% in August, not bad at all for a car that's currently undergoing a changing of the guard (you'll be seeing plenty of copies of the mostly new 2012 model shortly) during a month where car sales weren't expected to do well.

Way down the line, the four blue bars represent America's options for limited fuel consumption. Toyota Prius sales slid 20% compared with August 2010 but were up 20% compared with one month ago, July 2011. The Chevrolet Volt hasn't yet gained momentum in the marketplace. The Nissan LEAF out-sold the Honda Insight as sales of the Honda hybrid were more than chopped in half.

Speaking of Honda, The Good Car Guy will continue to publish Crosstour numbers with the Accord sedan and coupe until at least the end of this year. Honda has separated the two, but for comparison's sake with older charts, they'll hang together for the time being. Honda sold 1422 Crosstours in August, down from 2642 during the same period of last year.
