America's favourite large luxury sedan was America's rarest large luxury car purchase in August 2013. This wasn't a surprising development.
Mercedes-Benz is replacing the W221 S-Class with the W222. Sales of the Mercedes-Benz flagship were more than cut in half, year-over-year. Porsche, even with a 30% decline, still managed to outsell the S-Class with the Panamera, though only by four units.
BMW, on the other hand, was able to take advantage of the S-Class's situation with a 173% 7-Series increase. 924 7-Series sedans were sold last month, up from 339 a year ago. 7-Series sales are still down 10% this year. Lexus posted a 14.5% increase in LS volume and only trailed the 7er by 24 units.

Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maybach, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not broken down by model. ANDC estimates say sales for those brands in the first eight months of 2013 were 552, 1296, 368, 176, zero, and 672, respectively. Bentley sold 1565 cars from January through August; Maserati 1862, and reportedly, Tesla had risen to 13,150 units through eight months. Tesla, unfortunately, doesn't release model-specific monthly U.S. sales data.
