The Chrysler 300, Canada's 18th-best-selling car in May 2013, sold twice as often as its nearest mainstream brand rival last month. 300 sales rose 19% while sales of the second-ranked Ford Taurus fell 49% from 1405 units in May 2012. The Taurus ranked 19th in Canadian new car sales a year ago.
The 300 has a base price of $31,745, $3300 more than the base price of Chevrolet's new 2014 Impala. Sales of Chevy's big sedan plunged 41.9% in May and, coincidentally, Impala sales are down 41.9% in the first five months of 2013. The new car is slowly being introduced to GM dealers in Canada, dealers which currently sell more Cruze compact sedans than all other Chevrolet cars combined.
But the Impala and Taurus weren't the stories in Canada's large car category in May. The Chrysler 300 outsold the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Hyundai Genesis sedan, Kia Cadenza, Nissan Maxima, and Toyota Avalon combined, with 494 units to spare. Is this the new norm for the big Chrysler?
Probably not. Whether due to fleet sales are a glut of inventory - and then the opposite - sales of the 300 fell 76% from May 2012 to August 2012 and fell 76% from April 2011 to August 2011, as well. All this occurred after sales rose 241% from February to May 2012 and 834% from March 2011 to April 2011. In other words, sales of the Chrysler 300 are prone to fluctuation, and 1400+ units per month might not be achievable on an ongoing basis.
