15 of America's 30 best-selling vehicles in January 2013 hailed from Detroit, up from 13 a month earlier. This includes twelve of the top 20, up from eleven in December, and five of the top ten, up from four.
The leader, Ford's F-Series, owned a (very relatively) small 4.5% of the overall new vehicle market, down from 5.1% in December. This, paired with the increases reported by General Motors, led to GM's full-size pickup twins, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, outselling the F-Series for the second consecutive month. This time, the Silverado and Sierra beat the F-Series by 1450 units, a substantially bigger victory than they scored in December, when Ford sold 622 fewer full-size trucks than GM.
America's best-selling car, the Toyota Camry, was not threatened by any rival in January 2013. The Honda Accord recorded a 75% year-over-year improvement, but that figure is skewed by the Accord's 16th-place finish a year ago, when only 13,659 were sold. At that point, January 2012 was the Accord's worst sales month in a year, and American Honda hasn't sold fewer than 20,000 since then.
Officially, passenger cars accounted for 51.65% of the U.S. new vehicle market in January 2012. This year, that figure climbed slightly to 51.66%. There were 17 cars on this list last January; there are 18 cars in the top 30 this year. As for month-to-month changes, the Subaru Outback, Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Volkswagen Passat have been booted. In their place, the Nissan Sentra, Dodge Avenger, Nissan Versa, Chevrolet Impala, and Chevrolet Malibu have stepped in to fill the void.
